Each member starts with 15 pieces (white or black), which are placed on the board in the order shown below. In our Backgammon Classic online game, we use shades of brown, beige and dark brown. The game board has different areas: For the white/bright player, the home and out areas are located in the bottom right-hand corner, and for the black player, the home and out areas are located in the top right-hand corner. Just as in Chess and Checkers, Backgammon is played by two players on opposite sides of the board and both players have 15 checkers each at the beginning of the game. The backgammon board has 24 rooms or points where the checkers can be moved.
Every participant wants to be the first to bring his stones home. As you can see in the picture below, the white participant moves his stones counterclockwise and the black participant moves his stones clockwise. When a player has collected all his stones in his house, he can throw them all away. The first player to throw all his stones away wins.
Backgammon is not difficult to learn, but still it can be quite competitive. A number of strategies can be used to ensure victory. Backgammon experts agree that there are definitely some strategies besides the backgammon rules that can help a person win a game, but these strategies must be learned and followed closely throughout the game. Some of the strategies:
- building a “wall” of playing pieces
- to “close” your own playing field
- to place “anchors” at certain points on the board
It is also common that a typical backgammon game can be very short and last only a few minutes. For this reason, players often decide to play a series of rounds in one session. In this case, the players count the number of games won until one player wins the given number of games.
It is the players’ turn to take turns. Each participant throws two dice (this is of course done by the board game net). For each die he may move his own piece as many places in his turn as eyes have been thrown. If the player has rolled a double, i.e. twice the same number of dice, he may even move that number four times. (If you rolled 3 twice, you may move 3 four times).
The dice represent the random element of the game in Backgammon, but luck is not a factor during a game. It is the skill of a player. Often a player’s skill can be judged by the decisions he makes during the game. By correctly applying a backgammon strategy, you can therefore use the dice to your advantage, even though it may seem that you are on the losing side at the end of a game.
The checker may only move to free spaces already occupied by his own checkers. Or which are only occupied by an opponent’s checker. One and the same checker may be moved several times in the same turn, but separately for each die roll result, i.e. “intermediate landing places” must also be allowed.
If a checker hits a single opposing checker, the opposing checker is hit and placed on the bar in the middle of the board. These are the essential rules of Backgammon.
The opposing player must then start over with this piece. If a player has checkers on the bar, he must bring them back into play before he may move any more checkers. The player rolls the dice as in a normal move, but places his checkers in the opponent’s home board according to the number of checkers. For example, if the competitor has rolled a 3 and a 5, he must bear off one checker on the 3rd or 5th bar. The counting is done in the player’s own direction.
If no checker can be borne off, the roll is over and it is the opponent’s turn. In a board game net, the opponent’s turn comes immediately, because a player’s roll is checked on the bar to see if he can bear off any checkers at all.
In principle, a player is obliged to carry out all his dice roll results, if the rules allow it. If he could use both dice, but not at the same time, he must use the higher dice result. A double must also be used as often as possible.

As soon as a competitor has collected all 15 checkers in his home area, he may start rolling the dice. The checkers are removed from their home board when they can move out over the last board. If the result of the dice is not enough to bring a checker to the end, a checker is simply moved closer to the end. If the roll is higher than necessary, one of the checkers furthest away from the out is played.
Example: If the player has only checkers on 5 and 3, but rolls a 6 and a 5, he takes a 5 for the 6 and a 5 for the 5. However, if he rolls a 4 and a 2, he may not remove any checker from square 3. Instead, he must move one of his checkers from square 5 to square 1 and then move another checker for the 2 from square 5 to square 3 or from square 3 to square 1. In principle, only one checker can be moved per die. “Remaining” dice eyes cannot be used for a second checker. The first player to remove all his checkers wins.
